An excerpt from "History of the Anglican Parish of Woodstock" By The Ven. E. Vincent Martin
February 2, 1883 – “The new Church in the town of Woodstock – which was rebuilt according to the plan of the church which was being erected and was destroyed by fire in November 1881 – was called St. Luke’s – the same name as the former church.
The following is a newspaper account, dated Woodstock, February 2, 1883. “The new church of the Woodstock Church of England congregation is a large and beautiful building, quite in keeping with the best ideas of ecclesiastical architecture of the day. It is located on a large lot in a slightly elevated part of town, as also in a central locality being on the corner of Church and Main Streets. On this spot about 48 or 50 years ago the old church was erected. Previous to that time the Parish Church, situated about three miles below Woodstock, sufficed for the needs of the Rectorate; but with the growth of the town showed the necessity of a place to worship in it for the Episcopalians. As the years rolled by the congregation increased in numbers and wealth. “The new Church will cost when all completed – the bell and the organ are not yet to be supplied – about $8000.00. The Consecration took place today (February 2nd), the services commencing at 10:30 a.m. The large edifice was completely filled and the ceremonial was one of the most important ecclesiastical events occuring here for some time. His Lordship the Metropolitan (Bishop Medley) and the Coadjutor Bishop (Bishop Kingdon) were assisted by the clergy of the Deanery of Woodstock. Two bouquets ornamented the altar and above the reredos was a large cross composed of Immortelles and Everlastings. The music was very fine and the whole service impressive and attentively listened to by the vast audience.”
“On Easter Monday, April 14, 1884 it was resolved that we the Parishioners desire to take this opportunity to convey to our Right Rev. Father in God, the Lord Bishop of the Diocese, our most sincere and hearty thanks for the very kind and liberal assistance given to us when rebuilding St. Luke’s Church, and particularly for his most generous gift and valuable aid in procuring a Bell for the said Church. It was also resolved that the cordial thanks of the Parishioners be given to Mr. A. Stinson for his handsome gift of a platform of inlaid woods for the Font in St. Luke’s Church.”
“On August 23, 1887 the Rector was authorized to procure a Curate and promise him a salary of $600.00 per year.” “On December 10, 1888 it was decided to appoint a committee to gather information on the subject of lighting St. Luke’s Church by Electric Lights. At the next meeting of the Corporation on January 21, 1889 the offer of H. A. Connell was accepted for $60.00 and the Rector and the Committee be the ones to supervise the same.”
